KBT’s African training programs are designed and facilitated by Dr Catherine Macdonald. Dr Macdonald has been involved with Africa and Africans for 30 years, since her assignment as ‘minder’ to the Ethiopian National Folk Ensemble during the 1984 Indian Ocean Arts Festival in Perth in 1984. She has visited the continent regularly for over two decades, frequently for research purposes, commencing with her doctoral field work in Tanzania from 1993.
Catherine has been working in the community development and social impact field for over 20 years, more than half of that spent in the mining sector. Catherine has provided social impact/community development advice to extractive industries projects in Australia, China, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, India, Indonesia, Mali, Mongolia, the Philippines, PNG, Senegal and Tanzania.
Catherine is an acknowledged expert on socially responsible mining practices and has a number of publications on that theme, most recently the Framework for Socially Responsible Mining in Developing Countries, DRET, 2011. Catherine also led the team preparing the World Bank/ICMM Community Development Toolkit, published in 2005 and revised in 2012. She speaks Kiswahili, French, Malay (Indonesian), Dutch and Sinhala.
